American Express Cruise Partnership Direct Mailer
Client: American Express
Partner: Seabourn
Collaborators: Justin Parnell (creative director)
Role: Layout Design, Typography, Art Direction, Photo Retouching
Timeframe: 8 weeks
Tools: InDesign
Deliverable: 4-panel double gate-fold mailer
Overview: Working as a graphic designer at The Agency at DCG ONE, I designed a 4-panel double gate-fold direct mailer for American Express Platinum Travel to promote their cruise partnership offer with Seabourn.
Audience: This mailer was sent to approximately 100,000 American Express Platinum Card members. This campaign included two versions of the mailer tailored to American Express’ Consumer Platinum and Business Platinum customers.
My responsibilities:
Created layout design for an engaging hierarchy with the brand’s type, photography, and limited color palette.
Worked within the established sub-brand of American Express for Platinum Travel, which tailors to luxury experiences and is differentiated from the Amex consumer brand.
Designed the opening experience for the double gate-fold printed mailer.
Refined layouts based on feedback from my internal creative director.
Adjusted designs to accommodate evolving copy from the client and their partner week by week.
Collaborated with the client and their partner to tailor layout to meet their design needs.
Prepared documents for print production, including the layout of the four panels and setting up the files to include two types of varnish.
Result: This project started with the direct mailer for the American Express and Seabourn partnership. Following its success, the agency was tasked with creating four additional mailers for their other cruise partners: Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Explora, Oceania, and Norwegian Cruise Line. The design layout of the Seabourn mailer served as the foundation for the Regent direct mailer. Throughout this process, I gained valuable experience working with sub-brands and brand partnerships, as well as designing for print—covering everything from crafting the opening experience to handling production setup.
